Taj Weekes’ music mirrors an intense passion for social conscience in worldviews balanced by a calming sense of humility. Born and raised on the island of St. Lucia, Weekes sites his influences as reggae, calypso, classic rock, and classical music. Weekes’ passion for political and social justice is showcased in his reggae music and mirrored in his non-profit, They Often Cry Outreach (TOCO), which is dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged, at-risk and orphaned children in the Caribbean. In his artist bio, Weekes says, “I write from the heart and I speak about issues that move me. I believe that’s what really matters.”
In his teens, Weekes left St. Lucia to for the states to form Taj Weekes and Adowa as well as the multi-media company Jatta Records. His music flows in the vein of poetry. His unique lyrics are laced through rhythms that combine roots style reggae, afro-folk, rock and jazz. In 2005 Taj Weekes and Adowa released their debut album, Hope & Doubt, followed by 2008’s Deidem, which won “Best Reggae Album” at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards. Last year the band released their third LP, a [semi] acoustic album entitled A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen. They are currently touring select cities before arriving in Austin for SXSW for their showcase on March 19 at Flamingo Cantina. Check the schedule for full details.
