2015 Breakfast for Education scheduled and honorees announced

Brooklyn, NY (June 24, 2015)—Project Education, the New York-based organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged Saint Lucian families obtain school supplies, announced its annual Saint Lucian Breakfast for Education to be held Sunday, July 12, 2015 from 10:00AM to 1:00PM at the Saint Lucia House, located at 438 E 49th Street, between Church and Snyder Avenues in Brooklyn.

In its fifth year, the annual Breakfast for Education will bestow upon six honorees the Project Education Distinguished Service Awards. These prestigious awards recognize those who have selflessly made a lasting impact on the lives of those in need in Saint Lucia. Accordingly, the theme for this year’s event is “Giving Back, Changing Lives.”

The 2015 Project Education Distinguished Service Awards honorees are:

  1. Mr. Taj Weekes, an international musician and unwavering humanitarian whose dedication spans from his song lyrics to his social activism, efforts that have culminated in his appointment by the United Nations as a “UNICEF Champion for Children.” Weekes also founded They Often Cry Outreach (TOCO), a charity focused on improving the lives of underprivileged children in the Caribbean through sports, enrichment, educational, and wellness programs.
  2. Ms. Mathurine Emmanuel, a lifelong educator and community organizer who retired from teaching to pursue her career in the film industry. Emmanuel has produced several films, including “Ribbons of Blue,” “Troubled Waters,” and “Nana’s Paradise.”
  3. Mr. Curtis Browne, founder of Father’s in Action, an organization focused on mentoring young men in the Diaspora who are of Saint Lucian parentage. Browne is also an active member of the KARMA Carnival Band and a staunch supporter of many Saint Lucian initiatives in the Diaspora.
  4. Mr. Jacob Emmanuel, president of the Saint Lucia American Progressive League (SLAPL) and a dedicated community organizer. Under Emmanuel’s leadership, SLAPL has successfully undertaken a number of projects aimed at assisting the less fortunate on the island. Emmanuel also assists children in his community of Micoud by providing them school supplies.
  5. Pastor Leonard Laurencin, who heads the Advent Fellowship of Brooklyn and continues to play a crucial role in assisting Saint Lucians in New York. Laurencin and his church have consistently contributed to several worthy causes across the island.
  6. Ms. Sherlina Bernard, president of the Saint Lucia Mother’s Day Committee in New York and ardent supporter of worthy Saint Lucian initiatives. Bernard and her members continue to provide assistance to the St. Lucy’s Home in Saint Lucia and offer an annual scholarship to deserving young Saint Lucians for study in the United States.

Launched in 2010 in New York City, Project Education gives overseas-based Saint Lucians and friends an opportunity to help students and their families in Saint Lucia. Through the generosity of donors, Project Education has empowered over 1500 students in Saint Lucia by providing them with donated school supplies.
